Welcome to the Cascade Middle School League (CMSL)! This website is a resource for our league coaches, parents, students, families, and those interested in knowing more about our league schools’ athletic programs.
The CMSL is a middle school athletic association comprised of 17 private schools in the greater Seattle area that compete against each other interscholastically. Member schools, both religious and non-affiliated, range in size between 50 and 180 students. Current league athletic offerings include Volleyball (girls), Soccer, Cross Country, Basketball, Ultimate Frisbee®, Tennis, and Track & Field.
The CMSL operates on a four-sport season calendar. Volleyball, soccer, cross country (September-October), boys basketball (November-January), girls basketball (January-March), track & field, ultimate, and tennis (April-May).
While interscholastic competition among our schools is serious and spirited, the league emphasizes inclusion, participation, sportsmanship, safety, and the matching of comparable talent. Sport specific rules are in place to promote fairness and to prevent injury in contact sports. For team sports, most schools offer two teams, Division 1 (D1) for older, more experienced athletes, and Division 2 (D2) for less experienced athletes. Some schools offer a Division 3 (D3) for entry-level athletes. The CMSL does not keep league standings, nor does it offer or promote league championships or trophies for achievement.
The strength of the CMSL lies in its diversity. Our schools range in philosophy from progressive social justice to religious conservative. Great care is taken to respect the restrictions and sensitivities of all member schools and their students with regard to gender, religious, and individual identity issues.
